I encourage you to continue keeping the Sabbath. It is not a popular thing to do, but it is the right thing to do. Also remember that, in the Christian walk, character development is more important than rock-and-roll worship entertainment and the latest in stageplay technologies. I know of someone who left the Adventist movement for a Sundaykeeping church because things were more 'happening' in the latter; this line of thinking isn't very wise. What is more important is accurate preaching from the Scriptures and the development of righteous and holy character!

HOW MUCH IS GOOD ENOUGH?
You may have grievances about how things are done in your local Adventist church, but we are not one to emulate others just for the sake of popularity, acceptance and numbers.

What we're going for is QUALITY, not QUANTITY. People should be inducted into fellowship not by 'happening' things or soul-stirring music-and-dance, but by the testimony of the Scriptures.

Acts 17:11, 12 tell us that the believers at Berea "were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so." By studying the Word, "many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men."

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) SDA

28/08 Tuesday: Perfectionism vs. Perfection

It seems necessary to distinguish...between the biblical doctrine of perfection and the erroneous doctrine of perfectionism, (the latter of) which no true Seventh-day Adventist espouses.

Perfectionism teaches that a person reaches obedience to the infinite will of God at the moment of his conversion and that for all future time, he is incapable of sinning. ...no sane Seventh-day Adventist has ever put forward such an absurd and nonscriptural doctrine.

On the other hand, the Adventist view of perfection is that God empowers men to obey all that He has revealed to them. This revelation increases as the Christian grows in his faith. Of course, it is possible to become a backslider and even to lose eternity. Others will sincerely repent and salvation will be theirs. This is Christian perfection, the doctrine taught by Scripture.

Tell us about your experience as a Seventh-day Adventist attending a public university.
My student experience at the National University of Singapore was a challenging one. Because I was the only Adventist in the medical school, I was bombarded by many questions regarding my faith by Christians of other denominations, for they considered Adventism a cult. I had to really search the Scriptures to come up with adequate answers and to share my convictions.

Did you encounter any problems at the university?
One major problem I faced was Sabbath observance. We had classes, tutorials, and exams on Saturday almost every week, and I had to request rescheduling. Occasionally things worked out, but many times I had to skip classes and tutorials and fail the exams.

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

Then...(the disciples) returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. (see Acts 1:11-14)

With one accord in prayer and supplication the people gathered in the upper room. There were differences between them: they had their unique personalities, unique way of doing things and unique ways of dealing with things. There were women in the room as well as men. They have been told to wait in Jerusalem for "the Promise of the Father", but for how long? Yet with one accord they talked to the Lord and petitioned Him for their needs, humbling themselves before Him in making their requests. SDA

20/05 Sunday: Gotong Royong Bees

The quarterly churchground maintenance work began at around 0830hrs, with about 15-20 persons involved or preparing to be involved in various chores like felling trees, clearing drains, inspecting roof(s), cleaning air-conditioner filters, tidying pews and other church furniture, cooking lunch, mopping tiled floors, cutting grass (work done by an outside contractor), chopping up felled trees, burning beehives, scooping leaves from the koi pond, stripping yellowing leaves from palms, sweeping dust and pushing dirt, and doing practically everything that Singaporeans do not have to do at their Seventh-day Adventist churches.

Ropes were fastened Pathfinder-style to any tree we intended to fell. Chainsaws and parangs were employed. At Pastor Money's command, men, women and teenagers played tug-of-war with the tree in a bid to ensure that its demise would not sever overhead power lines. Felled trees were chopped up as much as possible into manageable pieces, which were then dragged across the scorching hot lawn to the jungle behind the pastor's office.

At approx. 1045hrs, the stripping of palm leaves at the koi pond area stirred some bees. They promptly began attacking flesh, and our good friend Thomas Tham got stung approx. 20 times. Hui helped to swipe the insects off Tham's back, and soon found himself a target. Mrs Tan, Timon, Victor and the pastor did helicopter rotor blades with a variety of cloths in a bid to swing them off; some were stung, but injuries were not serious. As the bees went zigzag across the SDAJB landscape, people went for cover inside the sanctuary (main church hall), Youth Centre, elevated cabin and their vehicles. Tham himself hurried into Hui's car; he was later taken to Hospital Sultanah Aminah, where Hui's wife, Yip Fong, is a doctor. She administered injections to 4 persons later that morning; Tham is now warded and may have to stay overnight under medical observation. He still has a smile on his face.

As the charade ended, work resumed. Mrs Ng emerged from the Youth Centre inner room and commenced cooking. Food is one of God's most tangible blessings, so we thank her efforts. Ingredients were supplied by Mrs Tan. Amazing, amazing, amazing, how vegetarian food can taste soooo good! And there wasn't any fake chicken, imitation crabmeat or whatever. Hui came back from the Hospital and packed some of the food for Tham.

Lunch ended at 1300hrs...hands went back to work. There were trunks, branches and twigs to be burned up (together with a dead rambutan tree that used to produce very sweet fruit). Pastor Money suggested we go visit Tham after the cleanup.

"Are you a half-baked Christian?" was the question posted by the pastor earlier today during Divine Worship. Do you wanna be lukewarm: neither hold nor cold, of the world and thoroughly mixed with it, thus unfervent and nonchalant about your professed faith in Christ?

Don't be a cake unturned, a tosai half-cooked or a bread with a flour center...such unpalatable food the Lord will spit out. Tough, but true. So run with the Gospel and carry revival, friends, before it's all too late.

Evangelistic and missionary activity needs to respect the dignity of all human beings. Individuals need to be truthful and transparent when dealing with other religious groups. Terminology should be used which avoids offending other religious communities. Statements which are false or ridicule other religions should not be made.

Quite apart from BADAI's freedom to express their beliefs (which they are certainly entitled to do), I am curious as to what it is exactly they are afraid of? For whom do they purport to speak? For all Muslims? That cannot be. As a Muslim, I am embarrassed by their efforts, which in my opinion are based on irrational fear, insecurity, and a serious lack of understanding of what the Article 11 forum is seeking to achieve. I am not opposed to the Inter-Faith Commission or indeed any other (official or otherwise) form of inter-faith discussion. I am secure enough about my religion (and the way I practise it) to discuss it openly, defend my views, change them if necessary, and more importantly, learn and progress from the open sharing of information and ideas. If you are a Muslim who chooses not to engage in such discourse, then by all means, don’t. But please, the “sensitive” label is really starting to tug at my patience.

Let us not forget that the Article 11 forum aims to educate Malaysian citizens on their rights under the Constitution. That is all. It is clear that some of us have failed to realise that the Article 11 Forum is not in any way encouraging apostasy; it is simply saying “Look, know your rights. You should have the right to convert in or out of any religion if you so choose, because that basic right has been guaranteed to you under your Constitution. That right cannot be derogated, and it belongs to you the moment you draw your first breath as a citizen of this world and of this country.”

The Holy Qur’an says “Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion” (109:6). Exactly. This does not merely capture the Muslim v Non-Muslim scenario, but more importantly in our context, the Muslim v Muslim scenario. It irks me more when a fellow Muslim, or my leaders for that matter, self-righteously impose their notional precepts and accordingly restrict me, than if a non-Muslim were to do the same. This is because a Muslim who does that is effectively insisting that “my understanding of Islam is better than yours and should therefore be upheld over yours”.

At the end of the day, it just seems to me that BADAI, and other like-minded institutions (the government included), are insecure and fearful. It is difficult for me to accept any other conclusion given the circumstances. The Constitution guarantees certain fundamental rights. Every citizen in this country should have the option to exercise those rights, if they wish. Whether or not they do, does not affect the rights of those who oppose the exercise of those rights.

They (and I am using this term loosely) banned The Passion of The Christ for Muslims - why? Is it because after I come out of the cinema, I am going to run to the next church I find, confess my sins and convert to Christianity? Funnily enough, no one has addressed the call by some groups in our country to ban The Da Vinci Code – why this hypocrisy and double standard? Is it because they want Christians to watch the movie in hope that they will walk out of the cinema disillusioned and convert to Islam?

They banned Babe - why? Is it because after I come out of the cinema, I'm going to find the next Chinese restaurant and stuff my face with pork, and afterwards rush for the shopping mall and purchase pig-skinned lining shoes?

They won't allow anyone who wants to leave Islam to do so, or even discuss the issue - why? Is it because if they do, the entire Muslim population of this country will want to convert out?

I would even go so far as to say: so what? If I am allowed to exercise the freedom entrenched in Article 11, and subsequently decide to convert out of Islam, what is it to BADAI or anyone else? If 10 million Muslims subsequently choose to exercise that right and convert out of Islam, what it is to BADAI or anyone else? Will BADAI carry the weight of my sins and that of the other 10 million on their shoulders as they march up to God on Judgment Day? I would have far greater respect for my country (leaders and citizens included) if they left me to choose my own path vis-à-vis my religion. I do not need my leaders or any other self-righteous groups to decide that for me.

“Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.” So, thank you for your concern, but if I am wrong about mine, then God (and God alone) shall judge me in the life hereafter. I assure you that no member of BADAI will be sitting on my judging committee and neither will I sit on any of theirs. So in this lifetime, as a citizen of this country, please allow me the right to exercise any and all freedoms guaranteed to me under the Constitution. That is all I ask. Absolutely nothing more and nothing less than what has already been guaranteed to me by virtue of being a citizen of this dear country.

14/04 Sabbath: Victory beyond the Grave

This report is an update on the story that appeared in the spring issue of AWR's printed Transmissions newsletter entitled, "Ethiopia: Traveling to the Afar". The publication is also available on the Downloads section of our (AWR) web site.

A few days ago, I was sitting with an Afar chief on an elevated mat inside his hut. A small fire added heat to the hot sun of this arid land. Goats and sheep, cows and camels wandered freely about. Every man carried a long sheathed knife in his belt as well as a rifle over his shoulder. Afars are not hesitant to use those weapons if they perceive a threat. I was told about a man who was killed on the spot for running over a goat with his truck, so we drove carefully on our departure.

I was accompanied by the AWR speaker for our Afar language programs. He is an Afar himself, and knows many of these chiefs and their people personally. He had been born and raised as Muslim. They say that if you are an Afar, you are a Muslim, but there are exceptions, however. This young man had a dream that started his journey to Jesus Christ. A figure dressed in white clothing appeared and told him to go to town. He obeyed, and in town he met a Christian woman who invited him to attend a church. He was enamored by the music and the worship, and slowly he made the decision to follow Jesus.

He was punished and persecuted by his people for saying he was a follower of Jesus. On one of the occasions in which he was put in jail, he happened to hear an AWR broadcast in the Afar language. He contacted the studio with some suggestions on how to make the program better and more appealing to the Afar people. The studio staff invited him to come to the studio and help them, and he is now their regular speaker. He still owns about 110 camels and 68 cattle, which his brothers are herding for him.

The AWR speaker knew that this chief was listening to “Ago Dongolo” (“The Voice of Hope,” in Afar language). And the chief welcomed us and gave me a place of honor. As long as the chief welcomed us, we were safe with the other Afar men. We had brought with us about 20 of the solar/crank radios that AWR is giving out in isolated places like this where there is no electricity and very few radios. An AWR donor - who as a nurse years ago helped with a clinic among the Afar people - provided money for 100 radios for these people. Our speaker knew that the chief would know who would use the radios to listen to AWR and not take offense. Besides, receiving the radio from the chief carried with it permission and a blessing to use it.

Imagine the potential of this approach! The AWR Afar speaker says that “The Voice of Hope” program is “famous among the Afar people.” There are many listeners because it was one of the first radio broadcasts in their own language. I have been told that there are now about 150 Christians at one of the Afar locations, about half of whom came to Jesus through AWR and continue to be regular listeners. Heretofore, there has been no Adventist Church work at all in these areas.

Please pray for these people, whose hospitality to us was outstanding. Despite their reputation for being fierce, the chief sent someone off to bring a goat that they planned to slaughter and prepare for us to eat. We thanked him over and over, but were unable to stay that long. AWR

Worried About Your Funeral?

Funerals are expensive, sometimes even more expensive than weddings. For instance, when the body of Emperor Hirohito of Japan was laid to rest on February 4, 1989, his funeral cost Japan 80 million dollars.

We prepare funerals and honor the dead as a sign of respect, and as a token gesture of our desire to keep them with us. But it’s impossible to do so. The Bible says this: “No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him – the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough – that he should still live on forever, and not see decay” (Ps. 49:7-9 NIV).

Once a person dies there is nothing any of us can do to get him back; the price is too high. The Bible says, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (Jn. 3:16). It also says, “You know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ ... Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God” (1 Pet. 1:18-21).

Can you claim these verses for yourself? Have you been redeemed by the precious blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ? The confidence of the Christian is that he has been redeemed from an empty way of life, will be resurrected from the dead and will spend eternity with the Lord (1 Th. 4:16-18). Do you have this confidence? If so, why worry about your funeral? If not, why not do something right now to gain this confidence?

A rural setting was chosen because it was considered more conducive to study than a location in the city. Opened in 1988 as a branch campus of Mission College in Bangkok, the institution also incorporated the Thailand Adventist Seminary, which for some years had been providing a non-accredited ministerial training program.

Mission College, as it is today, represents a union of three Seventh-day Adventist institutions: Southeast Asia Union College, Singapore (est 1906), Bangkok Adventist Hospital School of Nursing (est 1947) and Mission College, Muak Lek Campus (est 1988).

FU CEYI: I think we should be more careful with what we say about God. It appears disrespectful to suggest and compare Him in the first place to an incompetent OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). At best it is a poor illustration of His original handiwork. You can't miss Him if you listen to Him with your original Heart, hence Jesus said that in order to go to heaven You must become like Little Children - pure and innocent...

BLOGGER: Thanks, Ceyi. You're not wrong in your defense of God's creatorship; yes, Man was made perfect and is no robot, machine or "equipment". Instead, Man has free agency, and it is this free agency that was and still is being abused. The article does give some the idea that God's a lousy manufacturer. Note though that the Recall Notice mentions a "malfunction" (which in reality is what happened, back in Eden), not a "malmanufacture" or a "manufacturing defect". The Human Being is more than a machine -- it does not and is not required to follow strictly set routines and thought patterns (see how there are different ways to eat your breakfast, or print a banner, or design a car) -- so we must admit that our present fallen condition is due to a malfunction, not a malmanufacture, hence God can't be held guilty for anything. YET, we have Jesus as warranty..how sweet and comforting is that!

Paul asked God many times to remove the "thorn from his side" but God told him "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 7-10) So Paul said, "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Part 2: Pillars 5 to 7

The 5th pillar of our faith is the Sabbath. The Sabbath has been God’s day of rest since the foundation of this world. The Sabbath has been set apart as God’s day of rest even before sin came into the world. Genesis 2: 1-3: “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” Notice the 3 things God did for the Sabbath day, which God did not do for any other day of the week. 1st God rested, 2nd God blessed, and 3rd God sanctified the 7th day of the week.

After sin came into the world, the 7th day of the week has remained as God’s day of rest, and it is enshrined as the 4th Commandment of God’s 10 Commandments. Today the Sabbath is still the sign that the Lord is our God, and that it is the Lord God who sanctifies His people. Exodus 31: 12-17: “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you; every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.”

God’s words says that the Sabbath is God’s test, whether His people will obey God’s law or no. God said this during Israel’s 40 years wandering in the wilderness when God performed 3 miracles every week while providing manna for his people. Exodus 16: 4-5: “Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”

When sin and death are destroyed, and God creates a new heaven and a new earth, the Sabbath will continue to be observed by God’s people throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity. Isaiah 66: 22-23: “For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.”

On a day soon, at the end of time, the Sabbath will become the test of loyalty to God for the whole world, whether man will obey God’s law, or no. At that time, the Sabbath will continue to be the seal of God, to seal His people for eternity. At that time, Satan’s counterfeit, Sunday, will become the mark of the beast. If we do not learn now to keep the Sabbath day holy, we run the risk of receiving the mark of the beast when Sunday Law is passed on earth. God’s word says, To-day is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. Tomorrow may be too late.

The 6th Pillar of our faith is the Spirit of Prophecy. God’s word identifies God’s end time church as having 2 characteristics, namely, keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. The testimony of Jesus Christ is the Spirit of Prophecy, or the gift of prophecy. Rev.12: 17: “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” According to Rev.19: 10, “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy”.

I believe that the remnant church, or God’s end time church, is the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and that Ellen G. White is God’s prophet for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In the Bible, God sends a prophet to prepare people for a crisis. Before the flood, God sent Noah as His prophet to warn the antediluvian world of God’s judgment, and the coming flood. Before the exodus, God sent Moses as his prophet to deliver God’s people from Egyptian slavery. When Jesus came to earth, John the Baptist was God’s forerunner, to prepare the way for the Messiah’s 1st advent. Before Jesus comes the 2nd time, He promised to send Elijah the prophet, and God anointed Ellen G White as His messenger to the remnant church, to prepare a people for the end of this world and the 2nd coming of Jesus.

Praise God for the Spirit of Prophecy!

The 7th Pillar of our faith is the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ to earth, as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. The signs of our time declare in no uncertain terms that Christ’s 2nd coming is very near, even at the doors. There was a delay because God’s people were not ready. But one day soon, believe it or not, and ready or not, Jesus will come again. 2 Peter 3:9-14 is surely positive about it: “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night….Seeing then all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens, and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”

To be found of God in peace, without spot, and blameless, is to living a life of sanctification when Christ comes the 2nd time. As surely as Christ came the 1st time, as our Example, and as our Sacrifice, and Substitute and Surety, Christ surely will come the 2nd time to complete His work of salvation for mankind, and to bring the great controversy to an end once and for all. The 2nd coming of Christ will forever signify the crowning victory of Christ in the great controversy with Satan.

How is it with you friends? Are you sanctified in Christ, and preparing for His 2nd coming? I pray that when Christ returns, all of us here will be ready to meet Him in peace, and go home with Him to the better land.

May God bless you as you make each of these 7 Pillars, the 7 Pillars of your faith in God, and prepare to meet thy God in peace.

Pillar = Slender upright structure usually of circular or other symmetrical section serving to support arch, cornice, or other architectural weight or standing alone

Principle = Primary source or element, a fundamental truth as basis of reasoning, a law of cause and effect, a moral rule or settled motive by which conduct may be guided

Faith = Trust, belief in authority; believe implicitly; belief in religious doctrine esp as affecting character; belief in divine truth without proof; things believed.

Our faith involves our past, our present, and our future under God. Our faith is founded wholly upon God’s holy word. Today the whole of mankind faces a universal human problem. It does not matter who you are: rich or poor, black or white, whatever your religion, wherever you live. All human beings who are born into this present evil world all face one and the same problem, namely, death, and its cause, sin. As Solomon says in Ecclesiates 9:5: “For the living know that they shall die….”

Right from the beginning of time, God had foreseen this problem, and made provision for its solution. This solution involved God’s greatest sacrifice, even the sacrifice and death of the Son of God on this earth. Revelation 13:8 refers to Jesus Christ as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”. It is true Jesus was crucified on Calvary’s cross 2,000 years ago. But the Bible refers to Him as “the Lamb slain”, not 2,000 years ago, but “from the foundation of the world”. So God’s plan from the foundation of the world was to conquer sin and death, and God paid a heavy price for it, which was the sacrifice and death of the Son of God on earth.

So the Bible begins with the creation of this world, and ends with the restoration of this world from sin and death to its original Edenic condition and beauty, and the abolition of sin and death. Thus Revelation 21:1-4 predicted: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

For us who live in this present world of sin and death, it is our privilege to live by faith, by the faith of the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us. It is our privilege, by God’s grace, to look beyond this present evil world to the better world that God is preparing for all who love God, and trust and obey God. God’s Word teaches that there are 7 pillars of our faith, and they all begin with the letter “S”. These 7 pillars of our faith are:

1 Sleep of death
2 Salvation
3 Sanctuary
4 Sanctification
5 Sabbath
6 Spirit of Prophecy
7 Second Coming

Let us consider each of these pillars of our faith.

The 1st pillar is Sleep of death. God’s Word teaches us what death is. And sinners expect to die twice. Every human being born into this world expects to die the 1st death unless translated without seeing death. God’s Word tells us that the 1st death is a sleep. It is a sleep because there will be a time for waking up called the resurrection. Hear the words of Jesus on this in John 5: 28, 29: “Marvel not at this: for the time is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation.”

So according to Jesus, who will awake from the sleep of the 1st death? The answer is, “Everyone”, “all that are in the graves”. There will be 2 resurrections: one is called “the resurrection of life”, and the other “the resurrection of damnation”. God’s word says that those who rise in “the resurrection of damnation” will die the 2nd death, which is final, and from which there will be no return to life again. The book of Revelation talks about the 2nd death. Revelation 20: 14-15: “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Therefore all those who rise in “the resurrection of damnation” are those “whosoever was not found written in the book of life”, and they are cast into the lake of fire to suffer the 2nd death, which is final, and from which there is no return to life again. Those who are saved to avoid the 2nd death are those whose names are “found written in the book of life” “of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Today the world and many professed Christian churches are confused about death. But God’s word is clear about death beyond a shadow of a doubt. The 1st death is a sleep, from which there will be a waking up, on the day of resurrection...

The 2nd pillar of our faith is Salvation. What is salvation? The word “salvation” comes from the root word “save”. Save from what? Hear the angel’s words on this from the angel who appeared to Joseph in a dream. Matthew 1:21: “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” When Jesus saves us from our sins, he also saves us from death, because sin causes death. Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Salvation comes to you and I as a gift from God. God saves us from sin and its result, death. The Apostle Paul tells us that this salvation has appeared to all men, including you and me. Titus 2:11-14: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” These verses tell us that the grace of God brings salvation, and has appeared to all men. God’s grace that brings salvation has appeared to you, whether you know it or not, and whether you accept it or not.

The 3rd pillar of our faith is the Sanctuary. Before Jesus came to earth, there was the earthly sanctuary. Jesus as “the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) has fulfilled everything that the earthly sanctuary pointed forward to. So the earthly sanctuary service ended when Jesus died on Calvary’s cross, as our sacrifice. After Jesus ascended to heaven, he became our High Priest of the heavenly sanctuary. The earthly sanctuary illustrates salvation. The earthly sanctuary is God’s object lesson to man about salvation.

The outer court of the earthly sanctuary has 2 items of furniture, namely, the altar of sacrifice, and the laver. The main sanctuary itself has 2 apartments, namely, the 1st apartment, or the holy place, and the 2nd apartment, or the holy of holies.

The holy place has 3 items of furniture, namely, the table of shewbread, the altar of incense, and the 7 branched candlestick. The holy of holies has one item, which was the ark of the covenant, which kept the 2 tables of stone containing God’s 10 commandments.

The outer court, the holy place, and the holy of holies represent or illustrate the 3 stages of salvation, namely,

the outer court is justification
the holy place is sanctification
the holy of holies is glorification or sealing for eternal life

Justification is our passport to salvation. Sanctification is our fitness for salvation. Glorification is our salvation. The outer court illustrates justification. The altar of sacrifice of the outer court stands for the cross of Calvary on this earth, where Jesus our sacrifice was offered for us, and paid the price of our salvation. The laver stands for baptism, or conversion, when a sinner, who receives Jesus as his Saviour and Lord and repents and is baptized, is justified, or receives justification, or forgiveness of his sins and begins a new life of faith in Christ. The holy place stands for sanctification, and the 3 items of furniture there illustrates the means for a believer’s sanctification. The table of shewbread stands for God’s word. A believer feeds on God’s word daily to be sanctified. In John 17:17 Jesus prayed: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” The altar of incense represents prayer. A believer relies upon God, and prays without ceasing. The 7 branched candlestick stands for the believer’s witness by letting his light shine, and being empowered by the oil of the Holy Spirit. The holy of holies stands for glorification, or being judged as worthy to be sealed for Jesus for eternity.

The 4th pillar of our faith is sanctification. The word “sanctification” is from the root word “sanctify”. Sanctify means “consecrate, make holy, free from sin”. So sanctification means a life of consecration, holiness, and freedom from sin. To be sanctified means to be converted by God’s grace from a sinner to a saint, and to live the sanctified life for Jesus.

Jesus says that not every one who professes his name are sanctified and saved. To be sanctified is a choice we make daily, moment by moment, by God’s grace and power. We all need the oil of the Holy Spirit for our daily walk with God. The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to believers who obey God. Sanctification is our fitness for salvation. No one is ready to be saved without being sanctified, and living the life of sanctification for God. Listen to Jesus in Matthew 7: 21-23: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart, ye that work iniquity.” According to Jesus, those who are saved do the will of God. Doing the will of God is the opposite of working iniquity, or sinning. The Apostle Paul says that sanctification is the will of God for His people. 1 Thess. 4:3: “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification…” SDA

ADRA Responds to Jakarta Flooding

FEB 8: The Adventist Development and Relief Agency has dispatched emergency response teams to help meet the needs of families affected by the heavy flooding that swept through Jakarta, Indonesia, in the early morning hours of February 3, 2007.

Reports state that more than 300,000 people have been displaced and 36 killed in the flood-stricken capital city. Many of the displaced residents are currently taking refuge in schools, churches, mosques, and other public buildings. Damaged sanitation systems and contaminated water supplies throughout the city have increased the risk of diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, and typhoid. Basic emergency needs include food, medicine, blankets, and shelter.

Immediately after the flooding started, ADRA formed a rapid assessment team to evaluate the needs of the survivors and provide for their most urgent concerns. ADRA initiated its emergency response on Tuesday, February 6, as teams began distributing food packets to approximately 900 displaced families, or 4,500 individuals. Efforts are being targeted in two of the hardest-hit areas of the city:

1) the Kapuk section of West Jakarta
2) the Kampung Melayu section of East Jakarta.

ADRA's initial response also includes distributing bedding kits containing mattresses, blankets, and mosquito nets, along with household kits containing cleaning supplies and hygiene items. In addition, a medical team will be activated in coming days to address any emerging health issues resulting from the flooding.

ADRA is coordinating its response with the United Nations and local government authorities and will continue to meet the changing needs of flood survivors.

ADRA has been a registered non-governmental organization in Indonesia for more than twenty years, working primarily in the areas of basic healthcare, income generation, emergency response, and education. SDA

03/02 Sabbath: DVD Libary

We are now using media to reach the people with the good news of Jesus Christ!

Our small upstart "DVD Library" has been stocked with 40 of a possible 2000 titles of programmes produced by the Hope Channel, Three Angels Broadcasting Network, Amazing Facts, etc.

This initiative ties in with the 15-minute "Gospel Challenge" segment of our regular Sabbath School programme, and is meant to fire up the members to witness for Christ (personal and public) in the coming year, in line with the General Conference's campaign to "Tell the World"; the drive to bring "Hope for the Big Cities"; and the PEM's recent appointment of our church as a training centre for the new Institute of Christian Ministries (ICM).

This DVD library will be a welcome addition to our church enterprise, functioning as an inreach and outreach tool. The church of Jesus Christ is not a pleasure boat, but a lifeboat for saving souls, and all hands are needed on deck. It is important that we equip our city-dwelling church members sufficiently that they may share their faith with a sound mind and a bold heart.

SHOW
The DVD Library promises to add colour, vibrancy and understanding to our regular Sabbath School hour, with video excerpts arranged to quicken the 0830hr slowcrawl, and more to spice up the Gospel Challenge presentation.

LOAN
In March, the SDAJB family will be able to borrow selected DVD titles home for the viewing pleasure of friends and family. In this manner, we pray that the Adventist message of hope will spread further in our multi-ethnic community.

PURCHASE
The Librarians are still working out how SDAJB members may acquire the DVD titles they fancy. Each DVD costs RM2.50 to produce; VCDs cost RM1.50 each, but quality suffers.

25/01: Johor flood

JOHOR, MALAYSIA -- After heavy rains deluged the state of Johor, Malaysia, December 19-31, 2006, the government did its best to help the victims. Several NGOs and other companies went out to help. Among these organizations was the Adventist church in Kuala Lumpur (Peninsular Malaysia Mission).

Local church pastors and members sent food, clean and drinking water, and gave money to the needy, while others helped in cleaning up houses and shops and donated money to victims.

Liaw Wei Peng and his parents, all members of the Adventist church, opened their house to take care of flood victims. They allowed them to sleep in their house and cooked for them and with this gesture, victims expressed that they were touched and grateful.

The local newspaper also featured a story about Liaw’s son, who almost drowned while saving people during the onset of the flood.

Only two Adventist church members are known to have been affected by the flood. As of January 18, total donation in cash reached MYR 13,300 as relief and aid for the flood victims continue. [Tam Man Lin/Adventist News Dispatch] SDAJB

27/01 Sabbath: Hazards of City Life

Life in the cities is false and artificial. The intense passion for money getting, the whirl of excitement and pleasure seeking, the thirst for display, the luxury and extravagance--all are forces that, with the great masses of mankind, are turning the mind from life's true purpose. They are opening the door to a thousand evils.

Upon the youth they have almost irresistible power. One of the most subtle and dangerous temptations that assails the children and youth in the cities is the love of pleasure. Holidays are numerous; games and horse racing draw thousands, and the whirl of excitement and pleasure attracts them away from the sober duties of life. Money that should have been saved for better uses is frittered away for amusements. {AH 135.1}

Health is a great treasure. It is the richest possession that mortals can have. Wealth, honor, or learning is dearly purchased, if it be at the loss of the vigor of health. None of these attainments can secure happiness if health is warning. – E.G. White, Christian Education, pg 35 SDAJB

01/01 Monday: The virtual church slows down
Another post-Christmas earthquake; this time, it compromises the church's online presence

Internet and phone services were disrupted across much of Asia on Wednesday (27/12/06) after an earthquake damaged undersea cables, leaving one of the world's most tech-savvy regions in a virtual blackout. The disruption was widespread, hitting China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and elsewhere, with knock-on effects as far away as Australia for companies whose Internet is routed through affected areas.

There was no chaos on the stock exchanges or any of the other doomsday scenarios, but reports that services could be down for weeks were dramatic enough. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Taiwan on Tuesday night, which was followed by several smaller quakes in the region, apparently damaged the vast network of underwater cables that enables modern communication. 23/12 Sabbath: Concurrence

Dear Ian,

Before time runs out on you, I urge you, once again, to continue exploring the Sabbath issue till you arrive at either one of these 3 conclusions:-

1) that it has been abolished,
2) that it is still in force, but only binding on the Israelites,
3) that it is still in force, and is binding on all men.

I have arrived at a place that compells me to preach the Sabbath truth till Kingdom come; this concerns a commandment of God and the well-being of the Christian people. It is imperative that I spread the joy and humility of the Sabbath.

If you pick either #1) or #2), I'll stand down, requesting perhaps a brief explanation on your part. If you pick #3), a testimony is in order. Either way I am asking for your response. I have left not a few books at your disposal -- a wealth of opinion and a storehouse of research.

It does not matter how long you take; perhaps studying this issue during the 9-week vacation may seem like a good idea. Go ahead. However, I encourage you not to shrug it off. I believe the Sabbath is of great importance; my beliefs may not count for anything, though.

As of present, I am more sympathetic towards the third conclusion. The materials you left with me were most persuasive and enlightening, quoting relevant scriptures and presenting strong claims for Saturday as the rightful day of Sabbath. Yet there is this hesitation, reservations if you must, that my previously cherished understanding has thrown my way. A dilemma was thus birthed--a formidable opponent to defeat.

In other words, I am still wrestling with it though I am 80% convinced. More time is absolutely necessary to clear away any traces of doubt that might linger to undermine the new foundation under construction. This whole struggle and certain unwillingness to accept the Saturday Sabbath gives evidence to my partiality and inability to be absolutely objective all the time. It is strange that I should cherish the familiar though it may be proven faulty. Angst is almost an inevitable by-product when the status quo, especially one accepted without questioning and the norm, is challenged.

That said, the truth is more important than cherished notions and man-made theology. This should be the primary impetus for us to seek the truth even though fingers may start pointing and tongues go wagging that a heretic is in the making. Pleasing God is of higher importance than man's acceptance. Yet again, it is much easier to dish out such big principles than it is to apply due to our carnal nature.

"I have arrived at a place that compells me to preach the Sabbath truth till Kingdom come; this concerns a commandment of God and the well-being of the Christian people. It is imperative that I spread the joy and humility of the Sabbath. " Rejoicing with you over having established this truth with the leading of the Holy Spirit.

23/12 Sabbath: Good news or what?!

Will the 2nd advent of Christ be good news to us, or not? Do you know that the Jews in the days of Jesus were 'Seventh-day Adventists'?

Yes, they were! They kept the seventh-day Sabbath and were waiting for the advent of their Messiah, who would liberate them, who would set them free; but when He did come, how was he received? By rulers, priests and scribes? Or by shepherds and Magi? Herod who sought Him wanted His life, not to worship Him! When He healed and fed, crowds gathered; but when the preaching got too hard, the crowds dispersed. He was welcomed into Jerusalem with shouts of 'Hosanna', but 5 days later impaled on a cross.

Weren't the prophecies correct? Did not the promised star appear over Bethlehem Ephratha? Did not the masses see John the Baptist point Jesus out as 'the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world'? Perhaps this was not the Messiah they wanted. Jesus did not fit their idea, their 'mould'; they had expected a conquering warrior, but got a humble servant. They couldn't handle the possiblity that the Messiah should be a Lamb, not a Lion. "This can't be the Christ?!" And they crucified him. Those were the Jews of the 1st century.

The Seventh-day Adventists of the 21st century could very well react with the same angst, disappointment and anguish at Christ's 2nd advent. We say we want Him to come back (and soon!), but do we really desire Him? Do you not know that one who does not desire the Lord and can not stand His righteousness will be destroyed by the brightness of His glory during His appearing in the sky? When He appears that every eye see Him, the wicked and ungodly will not be able to pin Him on a cross for a second time.

We who call ourselves 'Christians' had better be ready. When Jesus comes again, he won't be a Lamb -- as is popularly portrayed, timid and helpless in the arms of the Virgin Mary -- but the Lion of Judah. He'll be a King, arriving with the shout of the archangel, the cry of the trumpet and a fleet of angels.

I was brought up in a Seventh-day Adventist home. I was baptized at the age of 15 simply because of my friends and the social activities at church. My understanding of Christianity was very superficial, though.

At 17, I started to smoke, drink, listen to rock music, watch movies, go discos and did all sorts of foolish things. I hated studying and told my parents to stop my education. I started work after Form 4 and my bad habits worsened in the working world.I was no longer a student, so I did anything I like.

I became an atheist, i.e. I did not believe in God. I attended church service all the same, but just to please my parents. The more I indulged myself in worldly excitement, the more depressed I became. Mine was a meaningless existence: there was nothing precious for me to look forward to in life. I felt so hopeless that suicide became attractive.

Late one night I returned from the disco. My heart was heavy, hopeless and empty. I was overwhelmed and cried out to God in prayer,

“God! Where are you? If you really exist in this universe……do something to prove to me that you exist!”

After the prayer, a small voice impressed my heart to look for a book I'd on the bookshelf. I found that book: a thin one entitled “National Sunday Law”.

I spent three weeks studying that book. I realized that God is real. How could all the prophecies be fulfilled with such accuracy?! I consulted the Bible to check the veracity of the book. Eventually I was convinced of God’s Word and prayed with an earnest heart, saying,

“LORD, now I know You are real. But my life is in such a mess. How shall I get rid of my evildoings? I cannot see my future. If you are able, please change my life……and I will serve you.”

We Have a Calling

We are Seventh-day Adventists. We have a calling. I fear that we are focusing so much on the things we can agree with the world on, that we forget our God-given duty to be the watchmen of the world. The Lord has appointed us to take the Three Angels’ messages to a perishing generation. The danger is that we will become so preoccupied in looking for acceptable things in the world that we commit a sin of omission by neglecting the final message of mercy that God has entrusted to us in this eleventh hour.

We are to be a people distinct from the world. The eyes of the world are upon us, and we are observed by many of whom we have no knowledge. I earnestly believe that it will be our marked contrast to the world that will draw true seekers, not our similarities.

Men will employ every means to make less prominent the difference between Seventh-day Adventists and observers of the first day of the week. A company was presented before me under the name of Seventh-day Adventists, who were advising that the banner, or sign, which makes us a distinct people should not be held out so strikingly; for they claimed that this was not the best policy in order to secure success to our institutions. But this is not a time to haul down our colors, to be ashamed of our faith. This distinctive banner, described in the words, "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus," is to be borne through the world to the close of probation. What makes you a Christian?

Is it that

you keep the Sabbath holy?
you pay all your tithes?
you abstain from certain foods, or
you don't wear jewellery?

The answer to all those is a resounding 'NO'! So what makes a person a Christian? How do you recognise one? What is the correct measuring rod for a 'Christian'?

There must be a distinctive feature that defines a Christian. Food? No, we do not worship a 'gluten God', even as we are surrounded by ardent Adventist health crusaders. :) All the doctrina; issues and policies of the church do not make you a Christian.

Let me tell you a bit about the Corinthian church during the days of Paul the apostle. Please turn your Bibles to 1 Corinthians.

8 PROBLEMS @ THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH

DIVISION (1:10) There were divisions of opinion, policy and practice in the church.
CARNALITY (1:12, 3) There was no unity, and members sided human leaders. Prevalent was a discriminatory and comparative attitude. It's a problem of carnality, judging a book by its cover. "Are ye not carnal, walk as men?"
MORAL PROBLEM (5:1) There was fornication in the church. One of the boys was having a scandalous affair with his stepmother.
WEAK DISCERNMENT (6:2) Bringing differences to the secular courts instead of to the Lord. They took internal issues out of the church and blew them up.
EXTREMISM (8:9, 13) Some of the Corinth believers were making 'food' such a major issue that it became a stumbling block to other believers. Some members were using their food standards to club people around. The weak were being bullied.
SUPERFICIALITY (12:1) Judging people by their particular spiritual giftings, elevating one man above the other, esteeming the excellent orator and the worker of signs and wonders.
DOMINEERING WOMEN (14:34) There were ladies in the Corinth church who were not ladylike in their speech and conduct; they were noisy and disruptive.
PROBLEM OF DOCTRINE (15:14) There was a doctrinal split in the church.

People who are carnal always like to fight, to determine aggressively who's the better one.

Are these to be the marks of Christians today? Are we gonna embroiled ourselves in so much strife and entangled one another in sin? For the sheer love of controversy we enter into dispute with our brothers- and sisters-in-Christ. Shall we define 'Christian' by those 8 characteristics?

What is the real image of Christ in me? Is there a real mark that sets me apart as a 'Christian'?

CHRISTIAN > CHRIST-IAN
Without CHRIST, I Am Nothing.

A Christian, very simply, is a follower of Jesus...a disciple of Christ! He is not one because he's a theologian, a Sabbatarian or a well-attired churchgoer; neither is he one by birthright. A Christian is one who has emotionally, willingly submitted to Jesus, granting Him to work on one's character. He has exercised his will to follow Jesus in a decisive manner.

BADGE OF A CHRISTIAN (1 John 4:7)

Love is the greatest mark of a Christian; the love we have for one another spells who we are. A Christian has genuine love in his heart for God and man. Is love just a feeling? Is it just romance? But romance is just one aspect of love. EROS is sensual and romantic love -- a vital ingredient in courtship and marriage -- but that's that. PHILEOS is brotherly love, or love for man because he's a human being, a soul and a creation of God. AGAPE, however, is unconditional love -- the one that God has for all of us.

We should have love for all, impartially. For all men will be equal in heaven, and in the new heavens and new earth. There, we will fly a flag -- not of the Hammer and Sickle, or the Stars and Stripes -- but one that depicts our oneness in Christ. Jesus died for YOU and ME; we are all washed in His blood.

Thus, we shall love our neighbour as we love ourselves. Who is my 'neighbour'? My neighbour is anyone next to me to whom I can show my Christian love.

Love is a principle, and it does not compromise with sin. It is a principle in harmony with God's law. It does not bow down to doing the wrong thing. Love does not rejoice in iniquity, but in the truth. Love does not fight or quarrel; instead, at times, it disagrees...peaceably. SDA

They that Pierced Him

"Ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." (Mark 14:62)

When Jesus comes on clouds of glory...

As they [the Jewish rulers] gaze upon His glory, there flashes before their minds the memory of the Son of Man clad in the garb of humanity. They remember how they treated Him, how they refused Him, and pressed close to the side of the great apostate. The scenes of Christ's life appear before them in all their clearness. All He did, all He said, the humiliation to which He descended to save them from the taint of sin, rises before them in condemnation.

They behold Him riding into Jerusalem, and see Him break into an agony of tears over the impenitent city that would not receive His message. His voice, which was heard in invitation, in entreaty, in tones of tender solicitude, seems again to fall upon their ears. The scene in the garden of Gethsemane rises before them, and they hear Christ's amazing prayer, "Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me."

Again they hear the voice of Pilate, saying, "I find in him no fault at all." They see the shameful scene in the judgment hall, when Barabbas stood by the side of Christ, and they had the privilege of choosing the guiltless One. They hear again the words of Pilate, "Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, orJesus which is called Christ?" They hear the response, "Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas." To the question of Pilate," What shall I do then with Jesus?" the answer comes, "Let him be crucified."

Again they see their Sacrifice bearing the reproach of the cross. They hear the loud, triumphant tones tauntingly exclaim, "If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross." "He saved others; himself he cannot save."

Now they behold Him not in the garden of Gethsemane, not in the judgment hall, not on the cross of Calvary. The signs of His humiliation have passed away, and they look upon the face of God--the face they spit upon, the face which priests and rulers struck with the palms of their hands. Now the truth in all its vividness is revealed to them. SDA

Be Proud of Who We Are

"Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part." (1 Corinthians 13:7-9)

TONGUES
I believe that the popular manifestation of tongues in churches today is not of God, but of the devil. Why do I say that? Because it is not biblical teaching:-

The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:5, "I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification." Tongues shouldn't be just unintelligible gibberish; they must be interpreted for the edification (spiritual encouragement) of fellow believers.

Regarding prophesying, I am glad that the Adventist Church has the inspired writings of Ellen White to guide us through the garbage of error currently prevading Christendom. "Read the writings of the prophet and know for yourself......we have a rich heritage, and we should be proud of it." I admonish the Adventist people not to keep turning to other churches for new styles, new solutions and new sources of power. Yes, popular churches have powerful manifestations (e.g. healings, casting-out of demons and speaking in tongues), but it could very well be one grand show staged by Satan and his minions. Rely on the Word of God (the Bible) for every wind of doctrine, and bravely advocate the Truth.

Adventists believe that tongues, when spoken, must be interpreted. "But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? (1 Corinthians 14:6,7)

"I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue." (1 Corinthians 14:17-19)

Not every member of the church possess the gift of tongues! 1 Corinthians 12:27-30 say "Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?" (emphasis supplied)

Again from the first book of Corinthians, chapter 12, verses 9 to 11, "to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills." So it appears that not every Christian will possess the one and same gift. To each his own.

SABBATH & CHARACTER
I encourage you to continue keeping the Sabbath. It is not a popular thing to do, but it is the right thing to do. Also remember that, in the Christian walk, character development is more important than rock-and-roll worship entertainment and the latest in stageplay technologies. I know of someone who left the Adventist movement for a Sundaykeeping church because things were more 'happening' in the latter; this line of thinking isn't very wise. What is more important is accurate preaching from the Scriptures and the development of righteous and holy character!

What we're going for is QUALITY, not QUANTITY. People should be inducted into fellowship not by 'happening' things or soul-stirring music-and-dance, but by the testimony of the Scriptures.

1. You must be born again.

Christianity is not a religion. Religion is Man’s attempt to explain the supernatural. Religion is based on good works; it is Man’s philosophy. Religion is man-made; it is full of confusion.

True religious conviction is not following a set of rules. Christianity is of divine origin; it is a new-birth experience. Christianity does not impose on adherents a rigid moral code. It is a journey of faith.
To religionists, faith is following a set of rules and regulations. It’s an utter defeat. It’s a failure, following an iota of the Law – reaching God by human effort; trying to gain God’s approval by your good works and rigid prescriptions to the dot.

But the Bible says, “I assure you, unless you are born again, you can never see the Kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

By beholding Jesus, we are radically changed. By looking to Christ, we are transformed from within. The Son of God must be lifted up, i.e. worshipped. Jesus must be lifted up in our lives. Belief in Christ brings rejuvenation to the soul.

You cannot take refuge in secular education; your career; your position in society; your ‘superior’ culture. These things cannot take you to Heaven. You can only take refuge in Christ, for He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (John 14:6)

“He must increase; I must decrease.” Christianity is not religion; it is a relationship with God. Let every facet of your life shine with the righteousness of Jesus. Let Jesus be magnified; your ego must decrease. You must work with Jesus; be yoked to Him.

When Jesus comes into your life, let Him take predominance. You cannot ascribe salvation to yourself; it is He alone who can make you righteous in the sight of God. Give up all your funny, funny beliefs and vegetarian gods and superstitions – Jesus comes first!

For there is no other name given under Heaven by which Man can be saved. SDA

This message was followed by a most meaningful and humbling footwashing ordinance. Brothers ministered to one another in this ego-dashing carbon copy of what Jesus actually did for His disciples before the Last Supper. Sisters bonded in this undertaking, while married couples were reminded that they were "Two Become One".

The church family later partook in a holy Communion of unleavened bread and wine, chewing on these emblems in remembrance of what Jesus has done for us on the Cross.

He is the Lamb of God, amen!

The letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day. (Esther 3:13). The decree that will finally go forth against the remnant people of God will be very similar to that issued by Ahasuerus against the Jews.

When the protection of human laws shall be withdrawn from those who honor the law of God, there will be, in different lands, a simultaneous movement for their destruction. As the time appointed in the decree draws near, the people will conspire to root out the hated sect. It will be determined to strike in one night a decisive blow, which shall utterly silence the voice of dissent and reproof.

The decree will go forth that they must disregard the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and honor the first day, or lose their lives; but they will not yield, and trample under their feet the Sabbath of the Lord, and honor an institution of papacy. Satan's host and wicked men will surround them, and exult over them,because there will seem to be no way of escape for them.

When this time of trouble comes, every case is decided; there is no longer probation, no longer mercy for the impenitent. The seal of the living God is upon His people. This small remnant, unable to defend themselves in the deadly conflict with the powers of earth that are marshaled by the dragon host, make God their defense.

The decree has been passed by the highest earthly authority that they shall worship the beast and receive his mark under pain of persecution and death. I saw the saints suffering great mental anguish. They seemed to be surrounded by the wicked inhabitants of the earth. Every appearance was against them. Some began to fear that God had at last left them to perish by the hand of the wicked. . . . It was an hour of fearful, terrible agony to the saints. Day and night they cried unto God for deliverance. To outward appearance, there was no possibility of their escape. The wicked had already begun to triumph, crying out,

"Why doesn't your God deliver you out of our hands? Why don't you go up and save your lives?"

Going all out with the Gospel in Sarawak

The Sarawak Mission has been growing rapidly, following an average of 35 (series) evangelistic meetings a year for the past 3 years.

Laptops and projectors afforded by SAUM, the Sarawak Mission and participating pastors enhanced presentations; things have since moved on to helping pastors buy sound systems.

In each of the programs, once the pastor has conducted the required numberof meetings, the equipment became his.

Before these programs began, an average of 12 (series) evangelistic meetings were held each year, with annual baptism numbers running between 300 and 500. The numbers of evangelistic meetings increased to 50 (series) last year, graced with a new record of 750 baptisms -- the highest recorded for the last 15 years!

There was much teamwork between pastors and church members; their common purpose was to reach neighbours and friends with the Gospel and the Adventist message of hope. Before a series of evan meetings, church members get acquainted with their neighbors, giving Bible studies and extending invites.

Church elders target non-Adventist villages for entry and evangelism. The local elders also mobilize their teams to conduct cottage meetings, do community service, etc.

The Gospel is affecting lots of people; numbers are exploding in some parts, church buildings being unable to contain them. Due to the lack of funding, many "new construction" requests are being put on hold.

Somewhere else, 250 Sarawak youth built a church in 5 days, held Voice ofYouth meetings, participated in community service and benefited from Leadership Workshops. In March, 70 American volunteers from Upper Colombia Academy came, building 2 churches in 6 working days at Bukit Batu and Rumah Sangir (Tatau), and offering free medical treatment for longhouse residents in the area.

Whenever there is rapid growth, there is always concern about what is being done to keep members active. Gilbert Tan, Director of the Sarawak Mission, iterates that the Mission emphasizes discipleship; he encourages members to participate in outreach programs involving the youth of the church.

Korean Students Jailed for Sabbath Stand

COURTROOM EVANGELISM Back in 1995, 2 Adventist students from Sahmyook Adventist University, Korea, were sentenced to two and three years in prison. Their crime -- failure to work on the Sabbath when ordered to do so by their military superiors.

Later, Korea adopted a five-day work week, and more freedom of religion was given to Sabbathkeepers and conscientious objectors.

But then, on July 20, 2006 the Korean Military Court handed down a 2-year prison sentence to Park Hyeong Joo for his refusal to work on the Sabbath when ordered. Mr Park is a young Adventist theology student (also from Sahmyook University) in mandatory military service.

The Korean Union Conference and Mr Park's family are preparing an appeal. In the meantime, Mr Park is determined to remain obedient to God's commandments, come what may.

Dr Han Seong Bo, a Sahmyook U. professor, says, "Park Hyeong Joo is a young boy, but he was so brave to show his faithfulness in court. I felt that the court was like an evangelistic event where God's Word was preached."

Pray that God will raise up many more faithful young men like Mr Park -- men who will not compromise their beliefs for work, school, or government. And may God help each of us to be more faithful in the relatively little tests that come to us each day.

Into the Waters and Up Again

Yeo Wei Cynn and Victor Ong Yong Jen were baptised today in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; both vowed in the presence of God, Pastor Samuel Money and the congregation to follow Jesus -- the Way, the Truth and the Life -- and to commit their hearts to the learning of His principles, precepts and royal law of love.

This baptism comes after a variety of back-room, sometimes one-on-one, lessons with Elder Robert Lee on a range of theological topics, e.g. salvation and the process of sanctification; the triune God; the royal law of love that is the 10 Commandments; the unique Adventist doctrine of the heavenly sanctuary and its cleansing since 1844; conversion; baptism; Creation and the seventh-day Sabbath, etc.

Wei Cynn was all smiles as she emerged from the depths of the baptismal pool -- an official-sounding name for a simple tank of water -- having her wish fulfilled. We congratulate her on her 'birthday', as Ps, Money so eloquently put it, and pray that she'll run the race, fight the good fight and be faithful to Christ unto death, never denying Him even amidst the trials and persecution of these last days. He "shall then reward thee a crown of life", see Revelation 2:10.

Shirley Tan, sister of Elder Timon Tan, is glad that Victor is part of God's kingdom and a new member of the JB church. "Welcome to the family", she says, and this echoed by a host of other churchgoers.

By baptism we confess our faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and testify of our death to sin and of our purpose to walk in newness of life. Thus we acknowledge Christ as Lord and Saviour, become His people, and are received as members by His church. Baptism is a symbol of our union with Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, and our reception of the Holy Spirit. It is by immersion in water and is contingent on an affirmation of faith in Jesus and evidence of repentance of sin. It follows instruction in the Holy Scriptures and acceptance of their teachings. (Rom. 6:1-6; Col. 2:12, 13; Acts 16:30-33; 22:16; 2:38; Matt. 28:19, 20.)

World Church: Using the Internet

Strategies For Global Evangelism :: A passion to reach the world for Christ via the so-called "information superhighway" brought together some 100 Seventh-day Adventist technologists, pastors and lay members for four days of meetings at the Fourth Global Internet Evangelism Forum in San Diego, California, August 31 to September 3.

"The gathering considered a wealth of ideas and strategies for using the Internet's reach and power to help finish the task of global evangelism," said Rajmund Dabrowski, communication director of the world church and one of the organizers. "We are passionate to use this technology in a convergent way to meet the needs of the church and expand our missionary outreach among the new online users and communities."

Sharing produced a wealth of suggestions -- to be considered by the world church's Coordinating Council for Internet Ministry -- on how to make Web outreach more effective, and how to improve follow-up with people who connect with the church online and are interested in the Adventist message. One plea was for a way to make it easier for names and addresses of interested persons to be shared across national and world church region boundaries. Jobson Santos, a pastor who works with the Adventist Media Center in Brazil, noted that he receives inquiries from Portuguese speakers in North America, Europe and elsewhere, and he sometimes has trouble getting these to local churches.

The conference began with a keynote address by Mark A. Kellner, assistant director for news and information at the world church headquarters. Speaking about the need to use the Web and complimentary technologies to enhance relations within the church community, he said, "I'd like to see us all do more things to make sure that we each and we all are helping each other 'cross the finish line' and enter the heavenly rest and reward Jesus promises to those who are faithful."

Ron Vhymeister, a professor at the Adventist International Institute for Advanced Studies in the Philippines, urged his audience to be sensitive when bringing Western-developed technology to other cultures. "Don't try to fix everything" in the culture you're entering, he said, and, "don't make Christianity needlessly Western."

Speaking several times to delegates, Pastor Mark Finley, a general vice president of the world church and a sponsor of the Global Internet Evangelism Network (GIEN) committee, urged his audience to be "difference makers" in their communities as they labor to share the Gospel. He also told his colleagues that using the Internet is inline with the church's understanding of the need to complete the task of global outreach.

"We believe that the task will yet be finished and that God will do something spectacular using various technologies in these last days of Earth's history," Finley said. "Seventh-day Adventists are a people of innovation. Seventh-day Adventists are a people of technology. We believe that God is going to finish His work using every means: radio, television and the Internet."

Addiction specialist Wendi Kannenberg offered a sobering look at the perils of Internet addiction, which, she said, were spreading beyond North America to other parts of the globe. Among those most susceptible to such addictions, she said, were "Those in positions of leadership who are isolated, tend to be under pressure to lead exemplary moral lives and are subject to intense on-the-job emotional stress."

"A challenge that we face is to take every doctrine that we have and not say 'do it because it's right and if you don't do it, you're going to be damned,' but we say 'do it because God is giving you this truth so that life can be more rewarding and more fulfilling every minute of every day. Instead of [just] proving it, I think we need to show the beauty of it,'" Coffin said. SDA

Add 12 more years to your life

Mrs. Jane Yap, newly-appointed Health Director of the Peninsular Malaysia Mission, delivered in all her youthfulness a passionate rhetoric on health, longevity and lifestyle habits yesterday morning during an extended Sabbath service that began at 9:45a.m. (click here for regular times).

Here and there in her lectures, which continued into the late afternoon after a most delicious luncheon, Yap taught that 7-8 hours of sleep a day, abstinance from tobacco and alcohol, a wise diet and even faith can contibute more years to one's life. However, she is excited with the prospect of Jesus' soon coming, and understands that the span of her life is not up to her own determination alone. Nevertheless, she admonishes the brethren to honor the body, for it is inseparable from the soul.

Adventists do not believe the soul and body are 2 entities. We don't have souls; we are souls. According to the Genesis account of the creation of Man and a smattering of verses from Ecclesiastes, John, Hebrews and other books of the New Testament, the "soul" per se is made up of "body" and the "spirit of life" given by God.

Yap's afternoon lectures highlighted the importance of regular, comprehensive medical checkups, for prevention is better than cure. Early detection can save pain and save lives.

Her contribution during Divine Worship was a sermon on "Hospitality", in which she explained the difference between entertaining one's guests and being hospitable towards them. Refraining from being too pedantic, she quickly points out that entertaining is self-centred, seeking to impress guests with things and other impersonal objects, exhibiting one's home and accomplishments through fine fixtures, furnishings and "gourmet cooking", while hospitality gives to others from the heart, seeking mutual fellowship and understanding, without hypocrisy in talk, even if simple food is served. Needs are met in the latter and friendships are made. In the end, entertainment lauds the hosts, but true hospitality uplifts guests and encourages everyone. Yap quotes Acts 12:1-18, explaining how Mary of Jerusalem, even in the trying times of Herod Agrippa, opened her home to shelter the followers of Jesus.

She also makes reference to Romans chapter 12, "Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ's body. We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others. God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out when you have faith that God is speaking through you. If your gift is that of serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, do a good job of teaching. 8If your gift is to encourage others, do it! If you have money, share it generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly."

Jane, and her husband Allan, will continue meeting with some of our more health-conscious church members today.

Pathfinders are a worldwide organization of young people sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, though young people of any religious persuasion, or none at all, are welcome and encouraged to join the organization.

Not unlike the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, Pathfinders go camping, learn camping/survival skills, receive leadership training, participate in activities promoting community pride & involvement (through outreach activities such as collecting food for the disadvantaged, cleaning & maintaining city and county parks, visiting and encouraging the elderly, etc), undergo interactive training in a variety of recreational, artistic, nature, conservation, vocational, and outreach areas (with awards/honors given for successful completion of the interactive training modules), appreciate nature, etc. SDA
